Message From the President: Disposing of Household Hazardous Waste

April 8, 2009

You can't be green if you don't dispose of chemicals properly! When getting rid of household chemicals, including pesticides, it's much easier to tell you what not to do than what to do. So here goes:

• Don't pour household chemicals down the drain or storm sewer.
• Don't pour chemicals out on the ground.
• Don't burn household chemicals.
• Don't pour chemicals in a ditch where fish and other marine life could be harmed by contaminated water.
• Don't throw chemicals away with the normal trash.

Be sure to always read and follow disposal instructions and try to use up all the product as intended. Community-based tox-away programs are another safe way to dispose of unused chemicals.

The easiest and safest way to dispose of pesticides and other household chemicals is to do what we do at Action: Never mix more than you plan to use and apply the products according to label instructions. This is the rule at Action - use it up as intended and there will be no waste to dispose of!

If there are no label instructions, then visit the link below for the proper state agency that should help you with disposal information. Contact me if I can help in any way.

Good luck and be safe - be green!
