Technical Tips: Fabric Pests
December 22, 2008
If you've noticed any holes that weren't present when you packed your winter wear away last year, fabric pests may be to blame. The materials most commonly attacked by fabric pests include wool, silk, fur, feathers, and animal hair. The good news is you can protect your fabrics by knowing what these pests look like, where they can be found, and how you can help prevent them.
There are a couple of different kinds of fabric pests. Carpet beetles and clothes moths are the most common culprits. Carpet beetles are about 1/8" long, oval shaped, and are usually black with brown legs. Some species have white, brown, yellow, or orange spots. Carpet beetle larvae have tapered bodies covered in hairs or bristles.
Carpet beetle infestations can easily go undetected for long periods of time as they prefer dark, undisturbed areas. Infestations are often found in boxes stored in attics, closets, and air ducts where they feed on stored clothing, furniture, and lint. It is rare for fabric pests to attack rugs and carpets in high-traffic areas or areas that are vacuumed regularly. However, they will attack areas close to walls or under furniture.
Whether it's your carpets, furniture, or clothing that's infested, a thorough cleaning is the best remedy for controlling fabric pests. Vacuuming thoroughly and regularly will help to remove embedded debris. Laundering in hot water should also kill all stages of fabric pests.
