Bat Removal in Pike County
October 14, 2008
Action recently completed a major bat removal job in Pike County Indiana where two schools, the Superintendent's office, and a church were all infested. A total of about 1,000 bats were roosting in the buildings and they had become a serious health and safety issue. Bats' waste carries parasites which can cause a critical lung disorder called histoplasmosis. When the waste dries, the parasites become airborne and are then breathed into the lungs. Another hazard associated with bats is bat bugs. Buildings can remain infested with bat bugs long after the bats are removed.
Even though bats can be hazardous pests, it's important to keep in mind their beneficial role to the environment. In addition to fruits, lizards, small mammals, and birds, a single brown bat can eat as much as 1,200 insects an hour! Much of a bat's diet consists of mosquitoes. And since mosquitoes can transmit diseases like the West Nile Virus and Malaria, bats are benefiting humans as well.
